The first night, before anything has happened
The game opens with one silent night, and then one round of talk. Nobody has done anything yet, so there is nothing to read. People introduce themselves, say how they intend to play, and that is all the first circle contains.
That opening night is the one where nobody is shot. The three who play against the town spend it learning who each other are. They also agree how they will choose targets on every night after this one.
So the second day is the first real one, because a night with a shot in it now sits behind you. Everything said in the opening circle can be measured against what people actually do. Imagine seat three announced on day one that they always lead early, and then said nothing on day two. Day one has just become evidence, which is the only thing it was ever for.
Beginners waste that opening minute apologising for having nothing to say, and it is the one mistake this circle offers. So use your minute to say how you plan to read the table. Then watch for anybody who promised something on day one and delivered nothing by day two.
In the school: one idea per lesson, its questions, and a table or a puzzle to try it on.
